The experience I gained as a marketing intern over six months

By 29 April 2024No Comments

Over the past six months I’ve embarked on an enriching journey into the world of marketing during my internship at Shapes. This experience is a part of my T-level in Digital Production, Design, and Development at Canterbury College and has not only broadened my understanding of marketing but has equipped me with valuable skills that I’ll carry forward in my career.

Starting at Advent

From day one I began with designing app visuals for the apps for Advent using Canva. This opportunity quickly evolved into a versatile skill set as I use Canva for various projects, including client work like creating engaging visuals for the Herne Bay Women’s Football Team. Furthermore, using Figma, I learned the art of transforming physical ideas into digital masterpieces for clients like Kent Trainers.

Creative mind

My internship was filled with creativity, especially in content creation across diverse platforms. From planning and producing TikTok videos to crafting professional LinkedIn and Instagram posts, I sharpened my ability to tailor content for specific audiences while upholding brand integrity, a crucial aspect of modern marketing.

SEO analysis

Diving into SEO analysis, using tools like SEMrush and Screaming Frog, I analysed website performance across different metrics, helping to shape strategic decisions and optimise digital content for maximum visibility and impact. Observing what is and isn’t working for competitors I was able to pinpoint what Shapes can do to optimise traffic.

Meeting clients

Attending client meetings was a pivotal part of my internship. These sessions provided valuable insights into client expectations, enabling me to bridge the gap between creative concepts and business objectives. Collaborating with clients like Tom Coller on brand enhancement projects highlighted the importance of aligning marketing efforts with organisational goals.

Additional activities

Beyond my core responsibilities, I explored various facets of marketing from photography techniques to the complexity of email marketing and the analytical expertise of Google Analytics. This comprehensive approach broadened my skill set and deepened my understanding of the marketing landscape.

Professional Barista

Lastly, amidst all the professional growth, I learned the importance of making exceptional coffee. Ensuring a perfect brew became synonymous with preparing for productive workdays and successful client meetings, a testament to the finer details that define a professional setting. (Not a professional I’d like to add)

Shapes wrap up

This internship has been an enriching experience that has broadened my understanding of the marketing landscape and has provided me with useful skills I will use all the way throughout my career journey. From seeing what tasks I enjoy thoroughly and what tasks I am successful in as well as skills I am not so strong at or don’t enjoy as much as others, everything I have done has taught me a lesson in some way and have gained experience from for later in life.

One of the most enjoyable tasks I was set was taking control of the TikTok account and finding and creating videos and content, to be able to have freedom and creativity whilst still being on task and topic is really enjoyable.
